The institutions
Royal Academy of Arts
Burlington House remains one of the great pleasures of London cultural life. The Summer Exhibition is an institution in itself; the major loan shows — particularly in autumn and winter — are among the most considered in the city.
Friends membership pays for itself within two visits and removes the queues entirely.
The Courtauld Gallery
The finest collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works in Britain, housed in Somerset House. Intimate in scale, exceptional in quality. The permanent collection alone justifies the visit.
Free on Monday mornings for those who know.
National Theatre
The Olivier stage in particular remains a singular theatrical experience. Productions here set the standard for British theatre — the programming is reliably ambitious and the building itself is worth an evening.
Day seats released online at midnight — excellent value for the best seats in the house.
Barbican Centre
The Barbican's programming across music, film, theatre, and visual art is consistently the most interesting in London. The Brutalist architecture is an experience in itself. The conservatory, open on select weekends, is one of the city's best-kept secrets.
The LSO residency season runs October through April — book early.
Serpentine Galleries
Two galleries in Kensington Gardens — the original Serpentine and the Sackler across the bridge. The annual Pavilion commission is the most talked-about architectural event of the London summer.
Free entry. The café terrace in summer is one of London's more civilised spots.
Royal Opera House
The ROH remains the pinnacle of operatic and balletic performance in Britain. The building — particularly the Floral Hall — is as much a reason to visit as the productions themselves. Dress accordingly.
Amphitheatre seats offer the best sightlines at a fraction of the stalls price.
